Course Description

Advanced First Aid provides those who have basic first aid skills with refresher and advanced skills, including advanced life support, to help the ill or injured. This unit of competency deals with the provision of advanced first aid response, life support, management of casualty(s), the incident and other first aiders, until the arrival of medical or other assistance, and provision of support to other providers.

The Units of Competencies covered are: HLTFA402B

Certification

This is an accredited training course and as such there are written and practical assessments. Upon successful completion, a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment will be awarded within the AQTF and under the authority of the NSW Vocational Educational & Training Act.

Pre-Course Requisites

All Clients’ participating in this program will have completed HLTFA301B Apply First Aid (level 2) or equivalent, which will need to be presented prior to commencing the course.

This unit is structured to incorporate the contents of: HTLFA404A Apply Advanced Resuscitation Techniques.

Course Overview

This is a competency based course, practical skills application will need to be demonstrated to assess competency, either as an individual or as part of a First Aid Team. Assessment will take place in simulated conditions that replicate first aid situations as realistic as possible.

This course will cover:

  • Revision of Apply basic First Aid
  • Evaluate the incident & assess the scene
  • Communicate essential incident details
  • Casualty assessment, history taking & observations
  • Manage casualty(s), including casualty packaging & movement
  • Oxygen administration
  • Confined Spaces
  • Hygiene, infection, triage & pharmacology
  • Co-ordinate first aid activities until the arrival of medical assistance
  • Cardiac care – cardiac conditions, medications, Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
  • Manage personal stressors in the work environment

Participation

There is a minimum of 6 and maximum of 15 clients per program. This course is conducted from various Fire & Rescue NSW Training Facilities.
